Fort Ord Dunes State Park
With 4 miles of ocean beach, Fort Ord Dunes State Park visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities in Monterey Bay’s National Marine Sanctuary. The park’s wildlife includes sea otters, Smith’s blue butterfly, pelicans, and more! In 1917, the U.S. Government purchased 15,000 acres for training troops assigned to the Presidio, naming it “Camp Gigling,” then later named Camp Ord in 1933, and then in August of 1940 was renamed Fort Ord. The Army transferred 979 coastal acres of the 28,000-acre fort to California State Parks in 2009, calling it as we know it now Fort Ord Dunes State Park.
