Join us and our partners, Advocates for Nisene Marks State Park, for a restoration effort focused on removing invasive ivy and supporting the long-term health of the forest. Volunteers will be working in various areas along the Old Growth Loop and will choose to join one of the following groups: Group 1 will work on a hillside above the trail to remove ivy growing on trees. While the slope is not extremely steep, participants should be comfortable walking and working on uneven, sloped terrain. Ground vegetation is generally low (up to ~10 inches), though some areas may be more complex. Work is tree-focused, with ivy carefully removed from individual trees to reduce damage and restore forest health. Group 2 will remove ivy spread across the forest floor, working just off the trail in areas with mostly gentle slopes. Vegetation may be dense, ranging from about 6–14 inches deep and may include hidden branches or other natural debris beneath the ivy that will need to be cleared while working. This effort improves forest health and wildlife habitat by restoring the forest floor to its pre-ivy condition. Group 3 is a great option for volunteers who prefer to stay closer to established trails. Teams will remove new ivy growth and resprouts in areas previously cleared. This will help prevent reinfestation of restored areas, improve trail conditions for park visitors, and support continued native plant recovery in previously treated zones. Ages 14 and older welcome (minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver signed by their guardian).
